There Will Be Superheroes In My Lifetime

Personal enhancement technology is becoming ever cheaper and ever more powerful. There are tools in development right now that increase strength, stealth, intelligence. Power suits. Invisibility cloaks. Mass storage devices that can hold all content, microcameras with ultra-high resolution, super drugs customized to individual genomes.

It's all coming, and there will be bad people using it all for bad ends - and there will be a need for other people to stop them.

Dean Kamen

So, tying in to the superhero post earlier today...

Dean Kamen is amazing. He's the Thomas Edison of our day, and nobody even seems to notice or care. He's got a super jumper device that lets a man leap forty five feet high in a second. He made an extremely articulate robotic arm, and portable dialysis machines and insulin pumps. DEKA keeps churning out these incredible world-changing technologies - and what the hell use is anyone putting them to? We're all just titillating ourselves; if one of those inventions had some kind of pornographic use, there'd be one in every American home. Imagine if DEKA had a few billion dollars of government research money pumped into it, you know, just one percent of the cost of the pointless Iraqi occupation. I bet anything that DEKA would have given the country energy independence in just a couple years. We'd have solar powered cars that produced oxygen and fresh water and could stack up like grocery carts.

Dean Kamen should be Batman. And do you think he's trying to do the Bicentennial Man thing? He seems to be well down the road to creating fully artificial human bodies, replicating organ and limb functions and all that.
