I planted an herb garden in the dining room this morning. The other day I went out and got a few clay pots and a big plastic bin - I cut holes out of the sides of the bin, and spread a few layers of regular potting soil with a layer of moisture holding soil in the center.
The smell of dirt is a beautiful thing. I loved running that enriched soil through my hands, patting it down and then turning it over and poking my fingers in it to make little holes. Eight different kinds of seeds were planted: basil, common chives, garlic chives, oregano, cilantro, thyme, dill, and parsley. They were all so different - some big, some tiny... I covered them all up and dumped a whole bunch of water on them and wrapped it over with plastic to keep all the moisture in.
I should start seeing some seedlings by March 7th. With luck, I'll have some healthy plants to cook with by the time Spring comes around. I might have to get another planter kind of thing though.
It also occurred to me that when I leave for Hawaii in April I'm going to need someone to take care of all these plants I'm growing... hm.
