Zippy Comics & Worcester Diners May 7th (Free Comic Book Day)!
Bill Griffith, syndicated cartoonist of Zippy the Pinhead, and Richard Gutman, author of the definitive books on the history of American diners, will appear together at That’s Entertainment in Worcester, on Saturday May 7th, 2005, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., for a book-signing event. The Worcester Historical Museum will provide photos of Worcester diners for display at the event, which is called “Zippy Comics and Worcester Diners.”
Zippy is syndicated by King Features Syndicate to around 200 daily newspapers here and internationally. Zippy may be read as a surreal satire of modern “throwaway” culture. Mr.Griffith’s work quite often suggests a deep nostalgic fondness for the kitschy ambience and hearty fare of the “lunch wagon”; he has many times featured meticulous drawings of the Worcester diners in his comic strip.
Richard Gutman is the author of three books on the history of diners: American Diner (1979); American Diner Then and Now (1993 and 2000); and The Worcester Lunch Car Company (2004). He is the leading authority in the field. Mr. Gutman has been involved in dozens of diner restorations across the United States.
Griffith and Gutman have, through their work, fostered appreciation for the aesthetics of the American diner in general, and for Worcester diners in particular. The commercial manufacture of lunch wagons began in 1887 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Several of these eateries have become beloved Worcester landmarks.
The event is free and open to the public. Attendees will be able to purchase books and request signatures from both Griffith and Gutman.
