Howl's Moving Castle!
Jun. 19th, 2005 01:35 amI saw it at the Criterion theater in New Haven tonight.
Man, I am a SUCKER for Miyazaki's cute. I absolutely adored this movie, at least as much as Miyazaki's other works, though it really lacked the scope and grandeur of Princess Mononoke and the sheer bizarreness of Spirited Away. Somehow he always manages to capture innocence and pure love and use them to make movies that make you go "awwww" over all the cute, but he does so without going overboard on saccharine sweetness.
If you've seen Kiki's Delivery Service, you may see many similarities to the world of Howl's Moving Castle. There are great flying machines, and there's a lot of magic, but the story is very straightforward and simple the way that fairy tales usually are. I was not at all disturbed by the English dubbing, it was extremely well done just as it was for Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. It is most definitely a fun see-it-again-and-again flick, I eagerly await adding it to my DVD collection.
