The World Bank
Oct. 5th, 2005 08:22 am"The private sector can make money out of things like water supply services; other people believe that the private sector shouldn't be in this business. What exactly is the role of this institution: is it to win a popularity contest, or is it one to be of service to clients... who can't walk away from those issues, who have to live there?"
"Now, for the activists, because the outcome's not what they want, they complain about process not being appropriate. What does it mean to say water is a human right? As those who proclaim it so would say, it is the obligation of the government of X to provide free water to everybody."
"Well, that's a fantasy."
--John Briscoe, Senior Water Advisor, World Bank
Do you think it's part of the job of the World Bank to make the world safe for people who want to hoard free water so they can sell it to you? Or should water be part of a public trust, like say, a national park is? (Or currently is, until the administration changes that too.)
