Monday Monday
Aug. 22nd, 2006 05:53 pmI had grandiose plans for Monday, but ended up only doing a small portion of what I thought I would do.
In the morning (technically it was still morning, it wasn't Noon yet), I struck out for Greenwich Village. The plan was to go see a movie at Film Forum, and go to the Museum of Cartoon and Comic Art. The original original plan was to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but they close on Mondays. So, I slept in, and got to the village in time for lunch.
I just happened to notice that DeMarco's restaurant was right nearby, and I wanted to see how the pizza made by the progeny of the master of DiFara's pizza compared. Sadly, there was no contest. Their slices, while cheaper by half, do not have the same caliber of ingredients nor do they have the same artisan quality. So it looks like I'll still be taking the Q train to Avenue J as long as Domenic keeps making pies.
Post lunch, I wandered around some more and then ended up back at Film Forum in time to see Jan Svankmeier's "Lunacy" which started off with a 3-4 minute explanation of the film from the artist. He proclaims in his statement that art is dead, and that the world has gone completely mad, and it was a bit depressing. The film was good, a tad predictable, but certainly a damning philosophical and political statement. Very misanthropic.
The plan for later in the day was to see "Rocky" at Bryant Park with Sylvia and some of her friends; I went over to Murray's cheese shop to buy a selection of yummy cheeses that I had researched the night before. By the time I got out of there with what I needed, it was too late to make it to the MOCCA, so I decided to just try and find a cafe to hang out in for about an hour. I finally came upon DOMA, and chilled out there reading for a while.
Sylvia called, mentioned that no one she invited would be joining us, and that I should try to grab seating at the park. It was in vain however, as the place was completely overrun. We met up and decided to just have a little picnic in front of the NY Public Library... we feasted on five different cheeses (more on those later), fresh blueberries, a baguette, a fig and peach tart, dark chocolates from around the world, and a bottle of red wine called "Goats do Roam". We made ourselves tipsy and spent the next five and a half hours wandering up Fifth Avenue being silly (more on that later too).
