Warren Ellis and John Cassaday have been writing this comic book called Planetary since 1999. It's only put out 26 issues so far - so it's basically averaging three issues a year. There are two issues left in the series, and hopefully they'll both be out by the end of this year... eight years is a long fucking time for such a short comic book series!

At any rate, [livejournal.com profile] karmadrome is also a fan of the book, and he asked me about my thoughts regarding its upcoming ending in an LJ interview. I replied that I would re-read the series with a careful eye and post my thoughts. I've spent the last two nights doing just that; I even added a couple more entries to the Planetary Timeline web page that I've maintained for the last seven years (which is apparently definitive enough to survive as a Wikipedia link and to also be translated into several other languages).

After reading all 26 issues, including the preview and three special one-shots, these are the questions that remain in my mind (and karmadrome was right, most of the loose ends relate to the fictional reality issue):

Is there still a living fictionaut? (The employee of Randall Dowling indicated that two of the crew had been killed, but there were originally three)

Why does the fictional being glow green?

Does William Leather refer to the fictionaut project when he mentions Broken Earth-A? If not, what did he mean?

Who did William Leather shoot on the Nautilus?

There are other things I'd like to see - like the ultimate fate of William Leather, and who the members of the shiftship crew are, but those aren't really unanswered questions per se. Upon re-reading, there were a bunch of things that jumped out at me; things that Elijah said in very early issues that seemed like off-the-cuff remarks turned out to be vastly important by issue 26. I honestly can not make decent speculations about the answers to these questions, but I expect that the last two issues of the series will be supremely satisfying.

I very much hope that when all is said and done that an omnibus edition is released, with extra material and liner notes from Warren. I would pay mucho dinero for it, to learn the rest of the secrets. And I would also love it if it were released in a leatherbound edition that looked just like a Planetary Guide. Dare to dream eh?
