It gets me to thinking this: what if the world only had 7,500 or 10,000 years left to live? We don't exactly have the technology right now to tell us whether or not this is the case, so let's just assume it's true for the sake of thought experiment. Today you witness Eta Carinae exploding, and Earth is either in the path of a huge gamma ray burst or some other destructive force erupting from it. Earth has 7,500 years to live, so assuming you and your species would like to keep living, what do you do about it?
