Today was the Mermaid Parade at Coney Island, which for those of you who don't know is a beach on the Southeasternmost edge of Brooklyn. Home of The Warriors and to the Wonder Wheel and Cyclone and a huge boardwalk and midway... all of which (hopefully barring the ferris wheel and roller coaster) is destined to be torn down by inhuman developers.

It was a complete and utter zoo, probably like Times Square is on New Year's Eve, though I've not bothered to do that myself. The cell towers were so overloaded I couldn't even send text messages, let alone place calls. Wall to wall people, all watching a parade of weirdos and freaks, many of them topless women dressed as mermaids.

I chose this to be the first day to wear my new shirt, featuring Alex Ross art that was a cover of an issue of the Village Voice:

(Yes, it is Bush and Dick mouth-kissing in front of a Washington phallus)

Normally I am a pretty self-conscious person. But lately I have been feeling good about life and about myself, and I've been working out, so I said "fuck it, who cares what anyone thinks" and wore this totally awesome garment.

Let me just say this: I have never before in my life felt so special, and certainly never because of a piece of clothing I was wearing. Every single person I walked by looked at me. People either pointed and smiled or laughed, or outright came up to me and proclaimed their love for my shirt, and where could they get one?? I was a little bit worried that some nutball might represent and tell me how horrible I was for wearing the shirt, and I came up with some good comebacks in case they were necessary, but I didn't get a single complaint.

It is now my favorite t-shirt, and I will wear it as often as possible.
