At one time I was opposed to getting manga books... when I first saw them, years and years ago, I thought they'd be a fad, or only appeal to the Pokemon / JapFan crowd. I originally thought the price point of US$8.00 to US$11.00 was too much to pay, but I then realized that that's actually a bargain if you consider them to be collections of individual issues (which is in fact what they essentially are) and that individual issues of comics tese days can run anywhere from US$3.00 to US$5.00.

I will admit that I now selectively pursue and purchase specific types of manga - I picked up the entire Here Is Greenwood series, as I was a fan of the anime, and discovered another, deeper layer to some of the stories that I didn't get from the animation. I would probably get NeiA Under 7 if I were to look for it... but my current obssession (yes, it really is obssession) is the recently completed series titled Death Note.

The NYAFF recently premiered two live-action movies based on the manga here in NYC, and I missed them due to my camping trip upstate. I was fascinated by the premise and the cool looking CG demons, so I figured I'd pick up the manga. It turned out to be a little tough to find, I suppose due to the new demand generated by the films. The book is basically a supernatural Sherlock Holmes style mystery, pitting two genius teenagers (one with godlike powers, and one with massive financial resources) against one another. The book is very geeky, and will appeal strongly to logical types, people who always look for plot holes in movies, and evil mastermind wannabes (yes, jessnut, this means you). I read 4.5 of the books in one night, and plan to get the rest of them (I believe it's up to 12 books) shortly.
