Shattering Food Myths
Oct. 14th, 2007 10:02 pmThere is no such thing as fair trade cocoa. It's true - the only requirement for "fair trade" is that a cooperative must have one annual meeting to decide how to split its money. That decision could be "Juan gets all the money, and the cooperative pays for all his expenses on a world-wide fact finding trip." On average, the cost to be "fair trade" certified adds about 10 cents of cost to the chocolate; so why are companies charging you so much more for it? Answer: because you're a sucker.
Also, making your own chocolate at home is actually more simple than brewing your own beer. All you need to do is get your hands on some dried cacao beans, hull them, grind them into liquor, mill them continuously with sugar and fat for 20-36 hours, and temper the mixture by melting it and stirring in already tempered chocolate or cocoa butter. It's incredibly easy, and karmically good for you.
You likely eat genetically modified food every day. Also true; nearly every bit of corn syrup produced contains GMO corn - codenamed "Liberty" corn. Your friends at Monsanto make it possible. And you better read your labels really closely and make sure you don't have any corn products in there... because there are no standards for labelling food as containing GMOs (because practically every processed food would carry that label if there were).
If you want to lose weight and eat healthy, stop drinking sodas with corn syrup and start cooking your own locally produced organic veggies. Your chance of diabetes doubles if you drink one soda a day, versus having one occasionally or not at all.
