Drinking The Kool-Aid (tm)
Oct. 19th, 2007 04:38 pmI am continuing to enjoy my new Macbook Pro, but am realizing that the job of transitioning my files to a new system was a lot bigger than I had thought. The realization that I have a number of files reaching as far back as early 1993 hit me a few days ago... and I further realized that I really need to look at all of it and figure out what's worthy of keeping, and what's just digital detritus. For example, I had a bunch of Wordperfect files, and no way to deal with them - so I downloaded some freeware text editor and converted them to text and Pages documents. Movies and photos are being organized in iPhoto, but the going is slow because I want to get it all set up just right.
I still have quite a learning curve to climb on all the iLife and iWork applications, too, though for the most part they're just intuitive and I keep stumbling onto features as I use them. I've also noticed that everything Apple builds into the system is roughly equivalent to what Google puts out in their Pack. At this point I'm even considering migrating away from Gmail and Google apps entirely and just moving everything completely onto the laptop. Overall, the user experience I've been having has been a terrific one; even the few times I've had application crashes, it never really hung me up at all, and I've not had to reboot it yet because of an application problem.
I placed an order for the OS X Leopard upgrade, and got an external hard drive for backup while I was at it. Time Machine is a pretty neat looking thing, and the new interface features are so blasted pretty and seem so convenient to use I could hardly pass it up. It's almost like Metacreations (the guys who made Kai's Power Tools and Bryce, among other great tools) built the interfaces to everything on the Mac OS.
My next acquisition now needs to be the Adobe creative suite... hopefully with that I can migrate my CorelDraw files into a new and improved Illustrator, and start learning how to use the latest Photoshop.
