Bastard Spammers Going Underground
Dec. 5th, 2007 05:40 pm"Search Engine Optimizer" almost sounds legit. But it's basically some goober spoofing links and spamming indexes with keywords to improve the page rank of his "clients". And these guys have tons of domains, all registered under the aegis of "domain privacy" companies who substitute their information on WHOIS with their own and promise to "take action" against people who abuse their privacy service. It's such a massive crock of shit, it's hard to comprehend; they're trying to add legitimacy to gaming search results, and then they hide underneath a false front. I know the Intarwebz are kind of Wild West when it comes to this shit, but Google needs to get better about giving people a mechanism to report these abusers and reveal who they are so their domains can get blocked. It's painfully obvious for humans to see when an SEO pinhead is gaming an index - in the cases I've recently seen, they were pages with nothing but keywords linked to various sites; and once the page got indexed, the spoofed links were removed, making the page seem innocuous.
I'm not one to advocate censorship. I'm all for free speech, and I believe that advertising and promotion serve some limited purpose. But gaming the system is not the way to do it, especially when it potentially hurts other people's ranking, and all you really end up doing is parting suckers from their money.
