Lynn Cheney = hypocrite

An AP story:

AP
10.14.04

Lynn Cheney says John Kerry's reference to her daughter in last night's debate was a "cheap and tawdry political trick."

Kerry was asked by the moderator if homosexuality is a choice. He noted that Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter Mary is a lesbian. Kerry said Mary Cheney would probably say that she was born that way. Lynn Cheney says Kerry invaded her family's privacy.

She says it gave her another chance to "assess" John Kerry, and she says it only reinforced her opinion that "This is not a good man." Cheney says she's "speaking as a mom, and a pretty indignant mom."

And then last night on The Daily Show, they had a clip of her and Dick in Hawaii where she dressed up her granddaughter as DEATH and said she was in costume as "John Kerry's health plan."

It seems she has no problem using her own family when it suits her agenda.

Well, of course she has no problem with it-it's her family, so she can use them as she will.

*sigh*

Did she have an invisible grandchild, costumed as "George Bush's health plan?"

to be honest, I think it's a horrible thing what kerry/edwards is doing with the cheney daughter issue. They are truely exploiting the issue in the guise of being nice. But it's so fake. It's so fake it hurts. And it's so terrible that they did it, I am so upset about it, I think the first time I heard it was the time that I went from wanting kerry to just simply not wanting bush.

What's horrible is that nobody is hearing anything from Mary Cheney (the lesbian daughter oooo spooky!!) about anything. Maybe she doesn't want to be a public figure - sure, fine, you don't want to be in the limelight. But she *is* a public figure, and her father is part of an administration that wants to deny her existence and her civil rights and it's a shame that she can't or won't stand up for herself.

Kerry/Edwards may make hay of it, but you can be damn certain that Bush/Cheney would be much, much worse about it if Edwards was the one with the lesbian daughter.

What horrible things are they doing? I truly don't understand all of this. Unless Mary is ashamed of being a lesbian (which seems doubtful if she's public enough about it for Kerry to know), then what's the problem with citing her as an example? I guess I thought of it as Kerry pointing out that even the other side of the race had gays among them...which doesn't really seem underhanded or unethical to me. Am I reading all of this wrong? What was he trying to do with his comments?
