I fail to see an effective distance between church heads running the government directly, and church heads running the government through puppet elected officials. If religious people are running a government for a church, and are being directed by their pastor/mullah/shaman/pope/voudoun priestess to vote a certain way, that's still a freaking theocracy.
In other words, let's say you have two medical doctors. One is non-theist, the other is religious. The former makes decisions based on his training; the latter makes decisions based on training, and his religious beliefs and maybe even his priest. You may be getting medical treatment in both cases, but one is clearly very, very different than the other. Especially when one tells you not to take birth control and not have abortions based on beliefs.
"I just think it's wrong" is probably the most simple-minded, and nearly least rational reason to vote on anything. It's only one step above "God told me to vote this way".
