I'm in the market for a new laptop in the next 14 days. My budget is hovering around $1000.00, and I want to have integrated wireless networking. Those are really my only requirements... I can get an Inspiron 1150 from Dell for just under my budget, but it won't ship until 4/28. I was also looking at an HP Compaq nx5000, and I can get that shipped in less than a week, but it's a bit over budget.

Anyone have any recommendations?

no no no mike...

Go to http://www.pricewatch.com -- even if you decide not to
buy one of these [third-party manufactured] systems, at least
use them for shopping/price-comparison.

What you want should be easily available for $800 or $900. I
presume you won't be playing Morrowind or similar on this
machine, so top-of-the-line GeForce insanity is unnecessary.

Have Rose buy it through her venders, she can get you the best deal on what ever you want.

HP's customer support is remarkably like that scene of the trash compactor from Star Wars. Only you don't make it. And it's much slower...

I suppose I should elaborate... A large portion of my job, when I was at pre-owned, was dealing with customer service for warranties or repairs or whatnot, with pretty much every major and 2nd string computer manufacturer out there. From this experience, HP/Compaq is lowest on my list for people I want to deal with. Dell is quite high on the list. If you know what you're doing, Sony is also very good, but you need to be prepared for things like "Hey, this drive doesn't ship with a bracket? Where's my eyeglass screwdriver...?"

All in all, I've been very satisfied with Inspirons, and you can chalk up the warranty an extra 2 years for like 50 bucks.

Dell

If you go Dell, get the extra warranty. As much as you can afford. Trust me. I have a latitude that just turned three. Everything started to fail... LCD, keyboard, motherboard...
