A mother recently asked me (on behalf of another parent) how one can read instant messenger logs. The other parent wanted to see what his fourteen year old daughter was saying and who she was talking to.
I asked her if the parents thought she was in danger. I asked if she had exhibited any odd behavior, or if she had tried to run away, or was having problems in school, or if they thought she was using drugs or anything like that.
The answer to all of the above was no. The only problem with the girl was that she was diagnosed with that "special autism disorder" that engineers and nerds are supposed to have. And that this means she has no social skills and that she's gullible, hence she needs extra "protection". So this justifies invading her privacy without any probable cause.
I was told that this was "one of those things" that only parents could understand. That once you have kids, you comprehend why it's necessary to do these things.
I really hope I don't start thinking that way if I become a parent.
