Apple reported USD30,000,000 in sales for the App Store - in like, a little less than two months? So that's maybe on the order of USD12,000,000 being taken in by iPhone developers each month. So there's easily a 100M annual market there now, and with phone growth and adoption, that should sustain over a couple of years. I'll take a fraction of a percent of that, thanks!

Ghost In The Shell
Aug. 11th, 2008 01:40 pmIf you haven't read the manga or seen the anime of Ghost In The Shell - either the original movies, or the resulting series - you might want to consider doing so. It seems that the more and more I read, the more I see the future in GitS coming to pass; maybe not in the next decade, but certainly within the next half century. Partly because of developments in technology (exoskeletons, robots, invisibility cloaks, drones, other incredible kinds of weapons), but also because of how I see things moving geopolitically too. Masamune Shirow is a pretty damn prophetic guy.
The idea of people hacking brains within my lifetime is a little scary, but also a bit thrilling. There seems to be a lot of drive towards tech and science that augments people, and I'm sure if I don't manage to get in any kind of accidents I'll probably see some real transhumans (maybe if I'm really absurdly lucky I get to be one).

iTunes and interfaces
Aug. 11th, 2008 08:29 pmNow that I find myself integrating the iPhone into everyday life, I'm wishing that some of its interface conventions would make their way into other things. For example, I really like the alphabetical/section slider in the address book - why isn't that available in my iTunes and Address Book on my MacBook? How awesome would that be, to multi-touch or click-drag on the slider bar in a window and search by alphabetical/section context? I could scroll right down to R and get my Radiohead songs just about instantaneously instead of hunting for them or scrolling back and forth.
For that matter, why can't I Ctrl-click in iTunes to sort multiple columns? Man, I'd like that. I'd like to sort by Artist, then by rating, and hear all my favorite songs by my favorite artist in a row.
I always hear "perfect is the enemy of good" and I believe it holds true in many cases, but by the same token I really think that there are cases where it's desirable to make continuous improvements in interfaces even when economic incentives aren't readily apparent.
