Sony continues its gambit to lock up the hardware end of the new online media world - they're now selling that thing that I dub an "iScreen":

If Apple doesn't release a competing product, their dominance of media is going to be seriously threatened. Granted, this is only a first generation product for Sony, but Sony will push the hell out of it to dominate the space - Blu-ray will die a heinous death if Sony doesn't have a TV/computer product like this. Why will people buy Blu-ray discs when they can (and do) download stuff directly?
So, there's the first price point: Sony's pitching a 22" iScreen for $3000. The Macbook Pro has similar specs, but is selling for $2800. So let's say that Apple wants to put out a 37" HDTV with a Macbook Pro built in... I bet that would demand a price of about $4000 or so to be profitable. Would Apple be willing to take a hit of about $800 per unit in order to be massively competitive with Sony? I think so. It's the final piece of their puzzle, it has to play out this way - they need to make a wall display Mac that's an HDTV that downloads HD content directly from iTunes. And the iPhone remote will control it all!
BTW, this VAIO thing is somewhat attractive to me right now because I don't have an HDTV, I don't have a Blu-ray reader/writer, and it's otherwise basically my integrated electronic dream come true... except for the fact that it runs Vista (which I hope I never have to use in my home life) and it's not much bigger than my current laptop screen. Two major points against it, sadly. If it were even 32" I would seriously consider buying one (when I had the cash), but I'm still waiting to see if Apple answers the call.
