Radio coverage: bullshit. TV coverage: bullshit. Letters to the editor: bullshit.

Why does Warren Ellis have to be such a fucking prophet? Everything he wrote in Transmetropolitan will come to pass... soon we'll have cloned politicians who are tailor made to be all image and no substance. We've literally entered a world of nothing but lies. Who do you trust when no source of information is reliable or believable?

"I can't debate on Friday, I need to work so hard on fixing on the economy!!"

Where the fuck were you BEFORE the crisis happened, Little Johnny? Oh right, you basically didn't vote on shit this year because you were so busy campaigning. Too little, too late, shitty job Senator.

John McCain, Mr. POW big shot military man, is afraid of debating Barack Obama. Maybe McCain and Palin should go hide in Cheney's secret bunkers until the Republican cronies are all done rigging the election for them.

Maybe there is hope after all.

Sony continues its gambit to lock up the hardware end of the new online media world - they're now selling that thing that I dub an "iScreen":

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=8198552921644513278

But of course it runs Windows Vista (eww).

If Apple doesn't release a competing product, their dominance of media is going to be seriously threatened. Granted, this is only a first generation product for Sony, but Sony will push the hell out of it to dominate the space - Blu-ray will die a heinous death if Sony doesn't have a TV/computer product like this. Why will people buy Blu-ray discs when they can (and do) download stuff directly?

So, there's the first price point: Sony's pitching a 22" iScreen for $3000. The Macbook Pro has similar specs, but is selling for $2800. So let's say that Apple wants to put out a 37" HDTV with a Macbook Pro built in... I bet that would demand a price of about $4000 or so to be profitable. Would Apple be willing to take a hit of about $800 per unit in order to be massively competitive with Sony? I think so. It's the final piece of their puzzle, it has to play out this way - they need to make a wall display Mac that's an HDTV that downloads HD content directly from iTunes. And the iPhone remote will control it all!

BTW, this VAIO thing is somewhat attractive to me right now because I don't have an HDTV, I don't have a Blu-ray reader/writer, and it's otherwise basically my integrated electronic dream come true... except for the fact that it runs Vista (which I hope I never have to use in my home life) and it's not much bigger than my current laptop screen. Two major points against it, sadly. If it were even 32" I would seriously consider buying one (when I had the cash), but I'm still waiting to see if Apple answers the call.

Doom?

Warren Ellis pointed out that there are massive columns of millions of tons of methane bubbling up into the atmosphere from beneath the Arctic Ocean. This could mean an insane ramp up of global warming.

Scientists have also apparently noticed that the sun is cooling down, and that the solar wind is lower than it's been in quite some time.

Now... I'm no anti-global-warming nut. Neither am I a climate scientist. And it's clear that human activity has increased global warming. But what if that's just incidental? What if there's some other as yet undiscovered mechanism of homeostasis between the Sun and the Earth, where the Sun's activity creates tipping points that freeze and thaw the Earth at various times. Maybe the energy the Sun pumps into the atmosphere melts the polar ice caps every so often, then the Sun cools down, and a whole bunch of greenhouse methane gets released into the air that maintains solar energy? Kind of like when you're filling a bathtub with hot water, and one end is still cool, and then you shut off the hot water but the water on the cool end of the tub keeps heating up, and then you turn on the cold water and it all starts cooling off again...

Maybe human activity only advanced what would have happened naturally by a few centuries? Not that that's a good or a bad thing, I'm just saying...
