Martin Luther King Day
Jan. 19th, 2009 06:18 pmOn NPR this morning, the Takeaway (a morning program I find somewhat obnoxious) posed the question: what would Dr. King be doing in today's world? And I thought about it for a short time while huddled under my covers and thought "Dr. King would be absolutely and utterly horrified by the AIDS pandemic raging through Africa. He would be there doing everything in his power to help people salvage their lives."
If Barack Obama really wanted to make a statement about our country being a beacon of hope and about his place in our history within his first hundred days, he would finally be the first president to really do something about the incredibly devastating plague that is utterly destroying Africa.
Understand that millions of people are dying in Africa every year from preventable diseases. As if ten tsunamis a year were happening there; or FOUR HUNDRED 9/11 scale terrorist attacks, every year.
We spent a trillion dollars on a pointless war in Iraq; if we spent a tiny fraction of that to help Africa, we would be saving millions and millions of human lives.
