The General is hospitalized today for a minor procedure. He went in in good spirits, and should be fine. He's been in discomfort the last few days because of a partial urinary blockage (and a bladder the size of a tennis ball), so today he is being sedated and catheterized and having fluids pushed through his system to flush him out. I'll be picking him up and bringing him home at the end of the day, and I'll have to keep an eye on him and bring him in for a followup tomorrow morning.

It's a possibility that his dry food was a root cause of his blockage, but I don't think it's necessarily because of that whole pet food recall thing. However, I will be switching him over to Newman's Own organic wet food ASAP, and researching homemade food solutions for him.

You may want to ask the vet for suggestions about food. As he gets older his dietary requirements may change. My cat had a similar problems a while back and my vet (also my uncle) put him on a presciption pet food.

They gave me two whole packets of info on the subject - Newman's Own is one of their recommendations, and the only organic one of the bunch. After comparing it to the others on their list, it's the only one that looks really complete... two cans a day for my big 17 pound beastie. I need to work his requirements into my budget!!

Very cool. If often leave the vet with a feeling of "more than I ever need to know" and a handful of papers.

And 17lbs...yikes! I bet it's 17lbs of 100% pure cuddle.
