What I Learned On The Farm Today

I learned how to pinch squash seedlings to leave only the healthy, big, superior babies.
I learned how to roll up "emay" (sp?) which is this fabric that you cover plants with.
I used a scuffle (or shuffle?) hoe to weed tomato plants and onions.
I find farm work to be very fulfilling. It was an incredibly beautiful day out today, and though the work was pretty hard I had a really great time doing it.
I met a couple of people... I worked with this girl Lissa from South Boston who is a Smith and Cornell grad and is doing a workshare - turns out today is her birthday, and she's going to a ten year high school reunion, so I guess she's about my age? She's pretty cool. I also met Katie, she ran the antique tractor over the fields; and I met Jessica who was distributing the farm share and taking down names.
I came home with two bags of greens - a share of five different things that I can't remember off the top of my head (turnips, kale, stuff). I ran into darius, dharia, and creatrixx as they were picking up their share too.
I can't wait to go back next week!!

on 2004-05-30 09:44 pm (UTC)Then I got home and washed everything... and I started to portion out all the greens and figure out what I'd make with them - and it's a lot of stuff! If this is just the beginning, and this is the smallest share of food I'm getting in the next five months, holy crap! I'm going to have so much food. I'm not going to know what to do with it all. I'm going to cook CONSTANTLY.
I found this site online: http://www.localharvest.org/ (http://www.localharvest.org/)
And I thought, hey, I should tell the farmer so he can add the farm to the site, and then I found: http://www.localharvest.org/farms/M6805/ (http://www.localharvest.org/farms/M6805/)
This guy is so on the ball, and the growing season is already a week longer - all the plants I was weeding today looked really excellent. It's going to be a huge harvest!!
