Purple Cow, Seth Godin

Unleashing The Ideavirus, Seth Godin/Malcolm Gladwell

The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell

I've become fascinated with the idea of spreading ideas lately. Culture and memes are foremost on my mind these days. I should pull out my old philosophy sufficiency and see what I was thinking about 8-9 years ago.

I end up staring at the cover of The Tipping Point a lot because there's a raised image of a match on the cover, and it looks like a real match and I keep wanting to brush it off the cover...

*ugh*

I used to work for Seth Godin, as an employee of Yoyodyne Entertainment/Seth Godin Productions.

He's a brilliant man. He was a really difficult man to work for, and I think I was too immature to overlook his faults as a manager to take advantage of the opportunity to learn from such an innovative mind.

He's particularly innovative in the field of marketing, but he's best at marketing himself. I often conflicted with him on business ethics, especially in terms of given credit where it was due. He's also a maddening devotee of Zig Ziglar.

But if his newer books fall in line with the books published by Seth Godin Productions, they are probably good reads with some great ideas.

Cool, I'm one degree away from Seth Godin!

What does Yoyodyne Entertainment do? What did you do when you worked for them?

When do I get to hang out with you again??

Yoyodyne Entertainment was little company that specialized in online gameshows... Basically, it utilized the internet as a medium for trivia games where you could, say, win a Miata. It used sweepstakes style prize regulations. It was... kind of seedy.

Yoyodyne Entertainment is where Seth first tested out his theories of opt-in marketing over the Internet. (As far as I know, he was the first person to ever adopt this concept.)

Yoyodyne was purchased by Yahoo!... they have since done nothing with the brand name, though they have adopted a lot of the technology and techniques.

I was "Technical Director"... in which my title was half my salary.

Hanging out... who knows? I hope soon. :)

I should add I only worked with him for about 6 months before I resigned to move back home.

[livejournal.com profile] jingsaw was a big fan of The Tipping Point. I didn't read it, myself, as he couldn't stop talking about it so I didn't need to. Heh.

But if you want to geek out about it with someone he's your man.

Malcolm Gladwell has a new book coming out in January called "Blink" that discusses the ability of the human mind to make snap decisions without "conscious" thought. I have it pre-ordered at Amazon!
